How much is a gesture worth to you? I was in the store yesterday waiting in line to check out and there was a man with flowers and a card in front of me. He seemed friendly enough so I asked the question that is always in my head when I see a man with flowers. “Special Occasion or Dog House?” He laughed and said “Neither, just because.” And my heart went “Awwwww, what a nice guy.” I told him as much and he said. “Well I’m out of town a lot and I’m leaving again tomorrow so…” What a thoughtful man. It wasn’t an expensive bunch of flowers but colorful daisies and beautiful in their own right. He went on to tell me he felt bad because his wife preferred Red Daisies but they are pretty hard to find apparently.
Now I love my husband but there is no way he knows what my favorite flower is. Nor would he think to find out. Flowers are flowers. But then again the kind of flowers he buys me isn’t that important to me. I could tell they were important to this man’s wife. It mattered to her that he thought of her favorite.
What my husband does do however is remember the little things that matter to me. He remembers to give me a Halloween card and a birthday card. My birthday is the day before Halloween. My mother used to give me both a Halloween card and a birthday card. When she passed away I asked him if he could continue the tradition so I wouldn’t miss my mom so much. And he always remembers.
So it makes me wonder, what are the important gestures to you? Which ones make a difference? I am an incredibly nosey person so I would love to hear from you the gestures that matter. Leave your story in the comments below!
